one of my favorite study spots

hi friends! after finishing my freshman year of college, i wanted to make a post with some advice for all my friends who are going to freshmen soon:) here are some things i would recommend:

  • be friendly & talk to everyone!! be brave! you will be proud you did it later!

  • get walmart+ to get your groceries delivered (see details here)... i paid $50 for the year & didn't have to go to the store!! totally worth it for me.

  • if you're not sure what to bring, you can stalk my dorm list here

  • meal plan & meal prep (my notion is linked here!! the best recipes ever!! pictured above): choose a day to prep for the week & plan the meals before you grocery shop :) cooking can save you so much money! and be fun! and a nice brain break! and make you some new friends!

  • study in new places (byu study spots here) not just the same ones. explore campus:)

  • be a good student! in my experience, working hard and getting good grades paid off through scholarships. don’t feel like you have to stay up late every night and do every fun thing, because you need to take care of yourself and work hard. you are a full time student, and that's your priority! but also pay attention and enjoy class! i had some amazing classes and i learned so much. take notes to succeed, but also to retain what you found interesting for after the semester is over:)

  • set goals with accountability (like a workout calendar, go to workout classes, get a gym buddy, etc)

  • don’t sit on your phone in lecture. bring a coloring page if it’s really bad:) it’s really easy to get distracted during lectures or large classes, but if you're there, you might as well learn something. just don’t show up if the professor allows it. i learned that it’s hard to pay attention sometimes BUT it’s usually worth putting in more effort to stay focused (even if other people around you are not).

  • plan your schedule!! (above) each week i planned all my homework assignments into my google/notion calendar. it looks insane but it was truly my secret to academic success. college is different because you have more homework but less class time so it's important that you are organized so you don't miss deadlines or forget assignments!

  • explore and do fun stuff! but be safe. make sure someone that you trust knows where you are if you're ever going on a date or out exploring! don’t do stuff you don’t want to do and don’t ride with people you don’t trust. be smart. but also be brave and try new things:)

  • work hard to be a good roommate. clean. communicate. chat. be kind but also be assertive and don’t let things go unsaid. create a good culture and it will pay off. roommates make or break the experience. for me, they made the year amazing!! try to be that for other people.

there's more but that’s it for now. if you make it good, it will be amazing!!

xoxo, kate
